short intro

Los Ángeles is a totally different experience. Don’t expect a New York because it has nothing to be compared with. Downtown LA you’ll find big skyscrapers but most of LA is flat. If it wasn’t for what Los Ángeles and Hollywood represent, there wouldn’t be much of an attractiveness to be seen.

Don’t take me wrong, you get the goosebumps just to imagine all the huge celebrities that live and walk through the same streets you are walking through and you even think you might see one. You’ll also be able to visit the fascinating movie studios and hike the Hollywood sign. However, I think its a bit overrated but worth it to add it to your bucket list and visit once in your life.

Our trip started in L.A for a week and then we flown directly to Hawaii (highly recommend this route)

OUR TOTAL BUDGET FOR FLIGHTS: 200EUR direct flight, including return, from Spain to Los Ángeles. Check out Skyscanner for good deals, specially if you have flexibility with dates you might find amazing options.

I recommend renting a car or a motorbike to being able to explore as much as you can. Either way, you can rely on public transports as they are very efficient.

Day 1. Arriving to L.A

We stayed at the Chic Loft Hancock Park. It was a very modern and comfy place very convenient to reach most places we wanted to go and with free parking outside.

Expect good weather conditions throughout the year. We were a bit unlucky because it rained most of our time there but didn’t destroyed our plans. That’s the uncommon thing so do not worry. The best time to visit LA is during the spring season (March to May) as in summer (June to August) its quite hot.

Los Ángeles, like most places in the US, is an expensive destination so don’t expect to find bargain deals. If you wish to save money, check out in Hostelworld and motels in the area.

What to do in Los Ángeles

10 things you must not miss

PLACES YOU MUST VISIT:
1. Downtown LA & Visit the Beverly Hills Hotel
2. Hollywood Boulevard:
Don’t miss the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the TCL Chinese Theater with its hand and footprints
3. Rodeo Drive & Beverly Hills:
Do some shopping or just walk around and feel like a celebrity!
4. Griffith Observatory
5. Venice Beach & Santa Monica Pier: Right on the west side of Los Ángeles you’ll find the little Venice with its canals and the iconic spot in Santa Monica from the route 66.

ACTIVITIES YOU MUST DO:
1. Hike the Hollywood sign:
Don’t just glance it from the distance, go and see it from another perspective! You can go walking by yourself or in a tour where the guide explains different stories of the city and points out celebrities’ houses on the way
2. Visit the Universal Studios & The Studios Tour
3. Drive through Malibu and feel the californian vibe
& obviously take a swim in the beach
4. Malibu Wine Safari
5. Hollywood celebrity homes

If you have more time...

Few days in San Diego

San Diego is another amazing city to discover and if you have enough days definitely consider visiting.

Los Ángeles from San Diego is about 2h drive away. If you are planning on renting a car it’s a great option to go by yourself and freely explore the city. Another option is doing this express tour which takes a full day and you can go and come back to LA in the same day.

PLACES YOU MUST SEE:
1. Coronado Beach
2. Little Italy
3. Belmont Park & Balboa Park
4. Barrio Logan
5. La Jolla Cove

Cross the border to...

Tijuana, Mexico

Remember: if you are renting a car its more than likely you won’t be allowed to cross the border. This is important as the police officers are very strict between the US and Mexican border. Even most of the car rental companies have set this restriction and you may be fined if they find out.

Either way, imagine you crossed the border!…

PLACES YOU MUST SEE:
1. Take a picture of Tijuana’s Monumental Arch
2. Vist the Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe
3. Mercado Hidalgo for food, souvenirs & tequila tasting
4. Go and watch some Lucha Libre
5. Parque Morelos
6. Nightlife in Avenida Revolución and Calle Sexta
