short intro

Hawaii is such a treat. I felt instantly the Lilo & Stich vibe as soon as landing into the islands. It’s so true what people speak about when referring to the hawaiian vibe: the laid back and friendly locals, the astonishing views and beaches, the flower necklaces, the night performances with ukuleles, seals and turtles sleeping in the beach, eating shave ice next to some chicken trying to steal some of it… honestly, it’s a paradise.

Hawaii consists of 6 islands and depending how much time you have to travel, you might have to choose which island to explore. Kauai was our number one and Big Island our second choice and that’s what we did.

Our trip started in L.A for a week and then we flown directly to Hawaii. We decided to travel first to Kauai and after 5 days to Big island before returning back to Los Ángeles and then back to Spain.

OUR TOTAL BUDGET FOR FLIGHTS: 200EUR direct flight, including return, from Spain to Los Ángeles. Then 300EUR flight, including return too, to Kauai and Big Island. TOTAL: 500EUR visiting Los Ángeles and two island in Hawaii in three weeks. Check out Skyscanner for good deals, specially if you have flexibility with dates you might find amazing options.

First things first: Rule number 1. Chickens rule the place. You’ll see them everywhere and is the main animal in the islands. It’s quite fun to watch them as you might be used to see dogs or cats in your country or origin and this totally surprised us when visiting Hawaii. There are even ‘be careful with chickens crossing the streets’ traffic signs.

Day 1. Arriving to Kauai

& spend 5 days

Kauai is a dream. I think I’ve never seen such spectacular geographical landmarks in my life. Definitely, the Napali Coast should be in your bucket list.

Even though it’s a volcanic island, there is green everywhere. Kauai is even considered the Garden Island.

We stayed at the Bohemian Magical Retreat and this is a place for nature lovers! No walls and direct contact with nature. I wish I could return back.

I highly recommend renting a car or a motorbike to explore the island as it’s quite difficult to rely on local buses, plus the cool things to watch are the ones you find randomly on the way driving.

Expect numerous weather conditions in the same day and I totally mean it. It might start to rain like crazy and five minutes later you’ll sunburn, and so on.

What to do in Kauai

10 things you must not miss

PLACES YOU MUST VISIT:
1. Drive the Waimea Canyon
2. Hike Koke’s State Park
3. Swim with wild turtles in Punalu’u Beach:
Get your snorkeling gear and nice water shoes (it’s very rocky) and feel the experience
4. Watch seals sleeping in Poipu Beach
5. Watch rainbows in Wailua Falls

ACTIVITIES YOU MUST DO:
1. Helicopter Tour through Napali Coast (no doors):
One of the best helicopter tours you’ll experience in your life. Ask the captain to let you extend your legs out of the window!
2. Eat Shave Ice and feel like Lilo & Stitch!
3. Watch a Luau Performance
4. Kayaking in Hanalei Bay
5. Enjoy a sunset cruise watching the Napali Coast

Day V. Flying to Big Island

& spend 5 days

We wanted to feel the contrast and that’s the reason why we chose Big Island. You get a boost while driving around and seeing all that lava. It’s crazy. Big island definitely breaks the stereotype of the average tropical island: green forests and black lava fields. The diversity is simply stunning.

This island is the biggest one in Hawaii, hence why they call it Big Island. You’ll need a few days to explore it properly.

You’ll be able to enjoy some of the most diverse and incredible beaches in the world: from yellow, to green and back sand color!

We stayed at Hale ‘Ohai: Monkeypod Tree House and it was a wonderful stay. The outdoor shower was my fav.
