short intro

The one thing we can all agree with is that Maldives really does have that breathtaking paradise dream. During my trip to this gorgeous country I had the chance to visit some of the most amazing islands I have ever been to.

Just in case you didn’t know: Maldives itself consists of a chain of about 1,200 small coral islands and sandbanks (200 of which are inhabited), grouped in clusters, or atolls. What does this mean? Well, it’s endless to explore! Also, the distances between islands are quite far away from each other, so it’s very important to choose which islands to visit as you may find difficulties to travel around specially if your trip isn’t too long.

Another important think to consider is that Maldives is an islamic country, which means that you will not be able to enjoy a cold (alcoholic) beer nor piña colada in the beach. The only places where alcohol is permitted is in resorts. I am sharing this with you because it quite surprised me at first when I found out I could not enjoy a nice cocktail sunbathing right in front of the beach. But, being honest, I had the BEST watermelon juices of my life while in there.

Anyway…

1. Fulidhoo

I would say this is the most peaceful island with the closest contact to marine fauna I have ever seen. You can literally walk around the island and see sharks and mantas straight on the beach swimming around. It’s crazy.

At night, all of them come together and sleep right in front of you and it’s such a show.

The island is very small, around 10 minutes walk from side to side. There is not much to do apart from relaxing. Honestly, come mentally prepared for just sleeping and sunbathing all day long.

11. Gulhi

Even if Gulhi isn’t as full of palm trees as other islands, I have to say this place has something really special. The vibes are different, I’m not really sure why. I don’t know if there was a reason but we really did felt something with Gulhi that made us stay and didn’t want to leave.

We felt that locals were closer to us, the food tasted even more amazing than usually in our time there. I don’t know what to say but we surely had a crush with Gulhi and we strongly connected with the island.

Also, it is very close to Maafushi (30 min by boat).

111. Maafushi

Maafushi is located about 3o min speed boat from Malé, making this island good to choose for a start point. Being honest, I am not a very big fan of this island. Don’t take me wrong, it’s perfect for activities at low cost. This photo from the right was taken on our 3 activities tour swimming with sharks, dolphins, mantas with lunch included in a sandbank, all for 50 dollars!

I guess after visiting the other small and barely populated islands, this one came across as too crowded with many people and buildings, not being able to feel that maldivian vibe everyone speaks about.

To be fair, at first we thought this island was super small (as it was the first island we visited as soon as landing from the plane) and after a few days exploring all the other islands we couldn’t stop laughing thinking how big it seems now compared to the rest!

111V. Ukulhas

This island still remains in my bucket list. We didn’t had time to visit Ukulhas but I really can’t wait for the day I have the chance to return back to Maldives and explore this place.

Compared to the other 3 island mentioned above, Ukulhas is located west side from Malé. I highly recommend to visit the nearby islands from the one you preferable like to visit. For us, Fulidhoo stole our heart, so we kind of decided where to go considering the possibilities near this island. There are a few flights going around but very limited. The main transport is the ferry or speedboat and distances are quite long.

Anyway, everyone defines this island as a local one but the beach seems like it was taken out from a resort. Mantas and sharks also swim around all day long nearby the beach.

V. Thoddoo

If you are considering Ukhulas for your holiday, definitely consider Thoddoo as well as this two island are next to each other.

This island is amazing for snorkeling and fishing. The beach is totally amazing with huge palm trees all the way long the island. A local island that makes you feel like being inside a resort. Just relax and enjoy.
