The bicycle capital of the world

Amsterdam is a gorgeous city known by its wide canals, easygoing attitude, its art exhibits and countless cyclists all around.

I must say this is one of my favorite cities in Europe. It has everything you need plus Amsterdam is such an original and out of the ordinary city. You will see what I mean when you get the chance to explore it.

Bicycles rule the streets of Amsterdam and this is an unwritten rule. Definitely consider to rent a bicycle to move around and feel immersed in the culture like a local.

Also, be prepared for all weather conditions. Don’t forget to bring your all-season clothing (raincoat, umbrella, sunglasses and sunscreen) as you never know how the weather may change during the day.

We stayed at the CitizenM hotel during our stay and highly recommend it, specially for the huge bed.

Explore the city

Amsterdam is great in many ways. You will get impressed by the amount of bikes and the beautiful canals around.

PLACES YOU MUST VISIT

  1. Jordaan: is a popular bohemian neighborhood with narrow streets and charming canals to get lost for a while and enjoy the silence while visiting some of the best boutiques in town.
  2. Red Light District: From sex shops and museums, to window girls and pubs; this is the naughty area. The best time to visit is at night as the district vibes comes to life.
  3. Anna Frank’s House: Discover how Anna Frank lived during the atrocities committed during World War 2.
  4. Wester & Vondel Park
  5. Bloemenmark: The Bloemen Market is the most famous flower market in the city. The market stalls are located on barges moored along the banks of the Singel Canal.
  6. Coffee shops: I mean, why not? You are in Amsterdam! Brownie time calling
  7. Free Tour around Amsterdam

Take a day trip to

Zaanse Schans, Volendam y Marken

We decided to book the day trip to explore the picturesque towns of Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Marken which also included a stop at a traditional cheese-made factory. Total price: 35EUR per person.

We booked it through Civitatis and really recommend it. This tour will last all day long, so it might be a good choice to end the day in the Red Light District for dinner and drinks on your return back to the city.

The distance of these three towns are quite close to Amsterdam, around 30min max. Don’t worry, you won’t spend too long on the road.

Visit Brujas

This one is a bit more far away but it’s a great option to discover if you have quite a few days in the city and want to explore a bit more.

Brujas is located around 3 hours from Amsterdam. You can either get a day tour or travel by bus or train and stay for the night (highly recommend it).

You will get the chance to discover ‘the North Venice’, one of the most surprising and best preserved medieval cities in the world.
