THINGS TO KNOW
Currency: The currency in the Maldives is the Rufiyaa (MVR) but it is very common to pay in US Dollars too.
Language: Dhivehi is the official language in Maldives but you’ll find most people speaks English.
Plugs: The power plugs are of type D and G. The standard voltage is 230 V and the standard frequency is 50 Hz.
VISA: No prior visa is required. The tourist visa for 30 days can be obtained free of charge at Malé International Airport.
Safety: There are no particularly unsafe places in Maldives. There can be theft or non-violent robbery in Malé, but in general the country is very safe. Bear in mind, Maldives is has a very strict Islamic religion, which means it is very important to follow beach regulations when it comes to swimming wear. There are designated bikini beaches in every local island for tourists and that should be the only place to be in a bikini. In resorts this does not apply.
Health: Local islands’ medical services are limited and very expensive. In tourist resorts there are primary care in case of illness or non-serious indisposition. For more serious cases, it would be necessary to go to the capital or opt for medical repatriation. It is recommended in any case to travel with a good medical insurance.
