WHAT TO EXPECT

China is another world, not kidding. Everything works out different in there and I mean everything. Starting with credit cards not working, social media restricted (VPN tip here) and no english nor other language to communicate at all. It feels like traveling to another planet. How cool is that? Not even mentioning how incredible the country itself is. There is so much to see…

Best time to visit

It’s a bit difficult to point out the best time to travel to the country as it’s huge and there are many diverse landscapes and climates. I would say the best time to visit China are between April to May and September to October, when most of the popular places have their most warm and low rain weather. Some destinations like Beijing, Shanghai and Xi’an are hardly affected by weather conditions so they are suitable to be visited all year long. Overall, China gets very cold during winter.

THINGS TO KNOW

Currency: The renminbi (RMB) is the official currency of China. The yuan (CNY) is the base unit of the renminbi, the name by which the currency is also known.

Language: The official language in China is Mandarin. However, there are over 300 dialects spoken in the country. Depending where you are going, don’t expect meeting many people who speak English.

Plugs: The power plugs are of type A, C, and I. The standard voltage is 220 V with a 50Hz frequency.

VISA:  Mandatory VISA with typically a single entry with a stay duration of 30 days. This must be processed at the consulate or there are specific agencies that specialize on managing Chinese VISAS. This last one is the simplest solution. In case you do it on your own you will need to do a lot of paperwork.

Safety: China is generally a fairly safe country. However, it is necessary to maintain the usual precautions to avoid robberies in tourist sites, in means of transport, in markets and in any other crowded area.

Health: Medical care in major cities is generally good, depending on the hospital. On the other hand, outside the cities, the quality of health care is variable and can be precarious in rural areas. Healthcare in China is not free and medical bills can be expensive. It is highly recommended to have good travel insurance
