Exploring the Dalmatian coast and islands

Croatia is a gorgeous country to travel to if you are looking for islands to explore and relax, history and architecture. The south region is the one we chose, traveling first to Split, then Brač, Hvar and finishing in Duvbrovnik. Everything is pretty close and with easy accessibility by road or ferry if you go to the islands. This itinerary is amazing if you have a week and you’d like to explore as much as you can.

OUR TOTAL BUDGET FOR 1 WEEK ITINERARY: includes meals, hotels, transfers and activities visiting 4 places – 1200EUR for both of us.

Bear in mind is Europe, which means everything is crazily expensive. Don’t think just because you are traveling east side will be cheaper because Croatia has been becoming more famous each time and pretty much has standard Europe prices. However, we tried our best to stick to our daily budget. As we traveled in August, we managed to find accommodation for 40-50EUR per night for two, and that was a challenge. For meals, expect 20-25EUR per person in each meal if you eat in restaurants. Overall, I’ll say an average of 150 EUR per couple per day is the way to get through.

Our flights in August were 200 EUR return flying to Split and returning from Dubrovnik. I always find good deals in Skyscanner. If you have flexibility with your holiday, play with different dates and flight prices may differ a lot. The best time to visit is during the summer season. It gets really crowded during July and August so June or September would be a better option.

Day 1 and 2. Split

We arrived to Split on the first day early in the morning and we decided to explore around as much as we could. The ancient centre is like nothing to be compared to. The whole district is taken up by a sprawling Roman palace and over the centuries, the architecture has been kept intact.

Also, a very important thing to consider is that Split is the best location to explore the islands as it is the reference point to all ferry transfers.

PLACES YOU MUST NOT MISS IN SPLIT:
1. Diocletian’s Palace:
Probably the most famous spot to visit in Split
2. Get lost in the old town streets crossing in and out through the four gates: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Iron Gate
3.
Walk around the Riva Promenade on the harbor side
4. Witness the sparkling hues of the Blue Cave & snorkel in the Blue Lagoon (tour option or rent a boat)
5. Saint Domnius Cathedral
6.
If you’d like to stay more days I would recommend on going to Krka National Park

On our second day, before catching the ferry to Brač, we decided to do something different: admiring Split from the air. We booked through Civitatis a 30min aircraft flight and it was amazing.

Day 3 and 4. Brac Island

Direct ferry to Brač

After flying around Split early in the morning, we returned back to the city and catch the ferry to Supetar, Brač. The journey was about 45 minutes and cost 10EUR per person one way. As soon as arriving to Supetar, we took the bus to Bol and took another 45min.

We only stayed in Bol as it was our preferred location. The town is lovely and the beaches are perfect for relaxation (apart from being rocky) and the different blue water colors are insane to watch.

Definitely visit Zlatni Rat beach. We woke up early in the morning to enjoy the drone views with no one around. Later on the day I recommend the rest of the coast to relax as it gets very crowded.

On the next day we took the ferry to Hvar around 2pm, so we had all morning to keep enjoying Bol.

Day 5. Hvar

The ferry to Hvar cost 15EUR per person one way and bear in mind there are only two ferries available through the day, so don’t miss them! You’ll be able to buy them online or 15 minutes before departure on the front desk just next to the ferry.

PLACES YOU MUST NOT MISS IN HVAR:
1.
Walk around the old town of Hvar
2. Climb the Spanish Fortress early in the morning to avoid crowds and admire the incredible view
3. Explore the Pakleni Islands
4. Best beaches: Malo Zarace Beach, Dubovica Beach & Pokonji Dol Beach

IF YOU HAVE MORE DAYS:
5. Visit Castle Tvrdalj in Stari Grad Hvar
6. Jelsa’s town
is one of the most beautiful towns in Hvar
7. Discover the small village Sveta Nedilja with numerous beautiful bays and pebble beaches, such as the beach Skala

Day 6 and 7. Dubrovnik

Wonderland for Game of Thrones fans!

Dubrovnik never gets old! The whole city is probably the most beautiful one in Croatia. The vibe, the architecture, the restaurants… everything is pretty special.

PLACES YOU MUST NOT MISS:
1.
Number one on the list is walking around the Walls of Dubrovnik (it is expensive but it’s something to not be missed)
2. Walk around the old town
3.
Spot some Game of Thrones spots and replicate the image in a photograph
4. Rent a jet ski or (what we did) rent a small boat and be your own captain and explore around the Elafiti Islands! We payed 130EUR for a boat to ourselves (no license needed) up to 8 hours!
